Capstone Course: Developing Financial Plans

This case-based capstone course prepares students of financial planning to effectively and appropriately develop, communicate, and monitor financial plans. Learners will recall, integrate, and apply knowledge and skills from the eight core domains of financial planning to create a financial plan appropriate for a specific client. This includes recommendations, implementation strategy, and monitoring of the plan, effectively communicating the recommendations, and meeting professional standards while acting in accordance with professional ethics. Completing this course requires students to utilize skills obtained in other courses and work experiences in the completion of a comprehensive personal finance case. During the course, students are expected to complete the following:

  • Review the key points of financial planning.
  • Complete a series of activities to practice the integration and application of essentials of financial planning.
  • Write an original targeted financial plan.
  • Communicate the plan (including submitting a portion on video).
  • Evaluate and make changes to the plan as necessary.


The instructor for the Capstone Course: Developing Financial Plans is Donna Jordan, who currently teaches Intro to Financial Planning in Florida State University's Certificate in Financial Planning online program.

In order to be eligible to take the Capstone Course, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Must have completed coursework in all six topic areas.
  • OR
  • Must be exempt from completing coursework in the six topic areas.
  • OR
  • Will take the CFP Board exam under "challenge status."
